Sabbath Day & 1 Corinthians 15

Hello Brandon and EwiseY, @It is Wednesday, 7/22/15, 4:40pm and I am at the FHC. @Some day I hope to get Y over hear so he can refocus on accomplishments in this world and build up some treasure in heaven. @I just finished commenting on the following talk and adding a little letter to the end on a different subject. I hope that the following will be received with open hearts and that you know my mind is devoid of offense of any kind towards you. @~~~The Sabbath Is a Delight @By Elder Russell M. Nelson @By the end of each week, my hands were sore from repeatedly scrubbing them with soap, water, and a bristle brush. I also needed a breather from the burden of a demanding profession. @v-I had never imagined sore, overscrubbed cracking hands for a surgeon. Woah, what a surprise! Every profession has its drawbacks/ liabilities. EricY has to wear gloves if he wants to keep his hands from getting black.-car mechanic. His back got sore and bothered him for years until he started to care for it with exercising and stretching, yoga etc. Teaching school I had 3 biggies: 1-constant pressure/stress about my next lesson and unit. 2-braindead at night and reclusive on. 3-lost muscle tone/ sore back. As a painter I had dirty hands, bad poisons inhaled, brain unstimulated. Imagine being a guard: perhaps jail guards are different but standing guarding, how boring! No physical exercise and no brain stimulation. Could anything be worse! There is no beautiful job when you are done like in painting, and there is no exposure to dialog and wonderful new ideas, and building minds like in teaching. For some people work really is miserable, toilsome, unrewarding boring, work. I waited tables and talk about a sore back and frustration through slow/ no customer hours! In '90 I reconsidered teaching Jr. High. I thought working for the National park service would be wonderful.-v@What did the Savior mean when He said that “the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath”?2 I believe He wanted us to understand that the Sabbath was His gift to us, granting real respite from the rigors of daily life and an opportunity for spiritual and physical renewal. God gave us this special day, not for amusement or daily labor but for a rest from duty, with physical and spiritual relief. @v-I love this idea. AS I listened to this talk I realized that banks being closed on Sundays and Post Office and doctors are really a blessing!-v @In Hebrew, the word Sabbath means “rest.” The purpose of the Sabbath dates back to the Creation of the world, when after six days of labor the Lord rested from the work of creation.3 When He later revealed the Ten Commandments to Moses, God commanded that we “remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” @v-I love the statement they are the 10 commandments, not the 10 suggestions. And then the idea that they are the lower law and not the higher law really puts merchandizers to shame. Working at Denny's I saw many 7th day adventists come in after church for a meal in their Sunday clothes. My respect was tainted for a brother looking for a video on Sunday when I had to take mine back over a decade ago. Bishop Kendall Jensen encouraged us to be kind and non judgemental about what we saw taking place in the park in our back yards on Sundays.-v@ Later, the Sabbath was observed as a reminder of the deliverance of Israel from their bondage in Egypt.@v-Boy, I am beginning to see how fast we forget and how badly we need reminders of God's miracles!-v Perhaps most important, the Sabbath was given as a perpetual covenant, a constant reminder that the Lord may sanctify His people. @v-This one is newer to me-v @In addition, we now partake of the sacrament on the Sabbath day in remembrance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.7 Again, we covenant that we are willing to take upon us His holy name. @The Savior identified Himself as Lord of the Sabbath. @v-Cool, he is my God. I own him. I declare my loyalty to him. -v@ It is His day! Repeatedly, He has asked us to keep the Sabbath or to hallow the Sabbath day. We are under covenant to do so. @v-this is a covenant I have carefully kept for decades. No TV at my house. -v@It wasn’t until later that I learned from the scriptures that my conduct and my attitude on the Sabbath constituted a sign between me and my Heavenly Father. I simply asked myself, “What sign do I want to give to God?” That question made my choices about the Sabbath day crystal clear.@-v beautiful secret and concept.-v@How can you ensure that your behavior on the Sabbath will lead to joy and rejoicing? @v-joy and rejoicing?-v@We make the Sabbath a delight when we teach the gospel to our children. @No other work transcends that of righteous, intentional parenting! @v-Remember how a minute ago I was describing drawbacks of specific professions? Work!-v@As you teach the gospel, you will learn more. This is the Lord’s way of helping you to comprehend His gospel. @v- this is so so true. You would not believe how I have benefited from sharing with you my understandings and commitments. -v@ Such study of the gospel makes the Sabbath a delight. @When Isaiah described the Sabbath as “a delight,” he also taught us how to make it delightful. He said:“If thou turn away … from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, … and shalt honour [the Lord], not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: @“Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord.”@Not pursuing your “own pleasure” on the Sabbath requires self-discipline. You may have to deny yourself of something you might like. If you choose to delight yourself in the Lord, you will not permit yourself to treat it as any other day. Routine and recreational activities can be done some other time. @Think of this: In paying tithing, we return one-tenth of our increase to the Lord. In keeping the Sabbath holy, we reserve one day in seven as His. So it is our privilege to consecrate both money and time to Him who lends us life each day. @Faith in God engenders a love for the Sabbath; faith in the Sabbath engenders a love for God. A sacred Sabbath truly is a delight. @Now, as this conference comes to a close, we know that wherever we live we are to be examples of the believers among our families, neighbors, and friends.23 True believers keep the Sabbath day holy. @v-When I had to work on Sundays at Denny's I thought that to really show my commitment/ my sign to God I could donate all my earnings to the church as Fast Offerings. I am ashamed to say I never had that courage. -v@ Hello Brandon, I know you have been working on the Sabbath Day. I am proud of you. As I have listened to this talk over and over there were things in it that I just admired and wanted to emphasize and share with you. My home teaching companion is someone I would love to share it with as well. As you can see, I did not include his whole talk, and I commented along the way to make it more interesting to read and to encourage you to comment and internalize as well. WE mark ourselves as Christians by wearing garments, keeping the Sabbath and many other things. Since I am going to give this to EY as well I am going to write something about EwiseY that I find astounding. And from what I have heard and seen of Varlo Davenport he is the same. I suspect that these are two men, who have conquered their lusts. Here is my evidence. D-just glossed over this topic when he taught an elder's quorum lesson and we went on to deeper relationship with Christ and family relationship concepts. It was just not an issue for Varlo. AS you know Brandon it was the biggest issue of my personal life! So to have Varlo just pass it off when I have had to learn extensive coping and conquering techniques shocked me. You have heard me teach and declare my live long challenge with that handicap and my joy at overcoming it more than a decade ago. There was one day in EQ when Alan Averett put his arm around me as I sobbed in joy about conquering that demon. Next, Y enjoys beautiful jazz music. He would be perfectly fine with listening to his jazz station everyday. He was kind enough to his partners in their docks that he switched off every other day. Y- loves technology and for years he was the sound system expert in the ward. And as one piece of technology after another came out he was first on the bandwagon. He and Jeff Whipple used to share stuff back and forth. So why aren't D and Y addicted to sex? How have they overcome that pervasive male addiction? I have no clue. But I am so proud of them. GBY-BPS-EWY-vj

7/23/15 Hey Brandon, It is Thursday! You may have seen some beautiful diagrams of the plan of salvation. I came across one the other night and when I went hunting for it thinking I could send it to coz Jpaul'68, I couldn't find it. I spent an hour or two looking! No luck. But I did find about 50 new ones on Googleimages. Surprise! So I sorted through them and found a nice pretty simple one to send him. And then I sent him another one that I liked that was a little more complex but cool. Jpaul wrote me back that he knows I believe that with all my heart but, BUT he can't reconcile it with 1 Cor 15!! I thanked him for daring to even consider it last night and went to bed. Today I came over to the FHC and started a batch of II. But as I worked my mind started asking myself, what is wrong with Chapter 15? I couldn't delay any longer. I had to go analyze 1Cor15! It was scary but fun. I did not know what I was going to find and whether or not I would even understand the chapter. I was unfamiliar with which one it was. So starting from scratch I began. Here are my results. I sent this to Paul just now so later I'll see what he has to say. This is the first time I have embarked on a journey like this with someone, especially a relative, so it is very absorbing, interesting, intriguing to me. I hope you feel a little of that. @~~Good morning JPaul, Tomorrow is Friday, July 24, a Utah holiday commemorating the 1847 arrival of the first pioneers. We call it Pioneer Day. @TEASE: Since we have made so much progress on the Incredible Man (Exemplary) let’s switch to 1 Corinthians! : ) @Untease: Since you pointed me to Ch 15 I can’t help but want to share with you my take on it. : ) To start I pasted the chapter summaries leading up to 15. @I am on google drive and see a little button that says comments in front of the left justification sign. I have never used it before. By clicking on this comment button it opens another box for a reply. Could be useful if we were to learn how to use it. @So this is what I believe about Paul the Apostle. 1 He persecuted the original saints. 2 He was totally committed! 3 Most of us would not do an about face like Paul did. But HF n JC knew that Paul was sincere and so, a personal visit from the resurrected Jesus was not only a miracle but caused a miracle inside Paul himself. He changed horses midstream. And then he went hog wild as an apostle of Jesus Christ for the rest of his life. Just imagine how empty our understanding would be without his writings. The appearance of Jesus to Paul is just as wonderful a miracle to me as Jesus walking on the water and inviting Peter to join him. Anyone who can believe these is an awesome wonderful faithfilled soul! @Alma Jr. in the BoM was the exact same type personality. So cool. And no, NO there was no way a 23 year old boy could have made up that story! : ) @Chapter 12 @The Holy Ghost reveals that Jesus is the Christ—Spiritual gifts are present among the Saints—Apostles, prophets, and miracles are found in the true Church. @Chapter 13 @Paul discusses the high status of charity—Charity, a pure love, excels and exceeds almost all else. @Chapter 14 @People should desire spiritual gifts—Tongues and prophecy are compared—Prophecy is the greater gift—Paul

says, You may all prophesy; covet to prophesy. @Chapter 15 @Christ died for our sins—He rose from the dead and was seen by many—All men will be resurrected—Paul speaks of baptism for the dead—The three degrees of glory are described—Victory over death comes through Christ. @Chapter 16 @Paul counsels, Stand fast in the faith; let all things be done with charity. @Chapter 15 @Christ died for our sins—He rose from the dead and was seen by many—All men will be resurrected—Paul speaks of baptism for the dead—The three degrees of glory are described—Victory over death comes through Christ. @1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; @2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. I BELIEVE THESE WERE SAINTS WHO HAD ALL BEEN BAPTIZED AND HAD HANDS LAID ON THEIR HEADS FOR THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST. AND BY GRACE THEY WILL BE SAVED AND BECAUSE OF THEIR LOVE FOR CHRIST THEY WISH TO PLEASE HIM AND OBEY THE COMMANDMENTS. BESIDES THAT OBEYING THE COMMANDMENTS IS EMPOWERING. @3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; SO SWEET, PAUL SHARED WITH THEM THE MOST WONDERFUL THING IN HIS LIFE! @4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: MIRACULOUS RESURRECTION. THE FIRST FRUITS OF THEM THAT SLEPT. @5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: NOTICE HE LEAVES OUT THE WOMEN. OOPS. NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY, YOU ARE NOT BEING POLITICALY CORRECT PAUL. (TONGUE IN CHEEK) Paul, is this Cephas, Peter?vj @6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. @7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. @8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. I SUSPECT THIS MEANS AFTER EVERYONE ELSE. @9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. CONFESSION. I LOVE MEEK, GENUINE, CANDID MEN. JOHN WAS SO HUMBLE HE NEVER NAMED HIMSELF IN HIS GOSPEL. AFTER DOING PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR 5 YEARS I SEE IT IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT BUT IT IMPRESSED ME AS A TEENAGER BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT TO USE “I” TO MUCH IN MY WRITING. @10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.WE CAN ALL SAY THIS CAN’T WE. I am what I am  IT IS SORT OF A WAY OF ACCEPTING OUR SHORTCOMINGS AND SAYING, OH WELL. HE THEN WORKED DANG HARD BUT GIVES GOD THE CREDIT. YES! THIS IS THE WAY TO BRAG/ PROCLAIM/ DECLARE GOOD WORKS APPROPRIATELY. @11 Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed. VARIOUS AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVES TAUGHT THEM. @12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? NOW HE STARTS TO TEACH THEM. @13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: @14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. @15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. @16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: @17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. @18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. LOGIC! @19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. NICE CONCISE CONCLUSION AND APPLICATION. @20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. THE TRUTH. CONTRAST WITH THE ABOVE OPPOSITE. THIS STRENGTHENS OUR MIND /BELIEF. @21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. ADAM AND EVE BROUGHT DEATH INTO THE WORLD. JESUS FIXED IT BY OPENING THE DOOR OF RESURRECTION. @22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. NOTICE ALL! @23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. UP UNTIL AND INCLUDING CHRIST’S 2ND COMING IS THE MORNING OF THE FIRST RESURRECTION. THESE ARE THE RIGHTEOUS. MANY CAME FROM THE TOMBS WHEN HE DID! HE OPENED THE GATE. ONLY A GOD COULD OPEN THE GATE. ONLY THE RIGHTEOUS WILL BE RESURRECTED TO BEGIN WITH.@ 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall haveput down all rule and all authority and power. AFTER CHRIST RULES FOR 1K YEARS SATAN WILL BE LOOSED AND DEFEATED AND JESUS WILL PRESENT THIS PLANET TO THE FATHER. ITS WORK WILL BE COMPLETE. @25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. MILLENIUM @26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. WE WILL ALL BE IMMORTAL. @27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. CHRIST HAD/HAS POWER OVER ALL. @28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all. HEAVENLY FATHER PUT JESUS CHRIST IN CHARGE OF THIS WORLD. @29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? JUST LIKE US THEY BAPTIZED FOR THE DEAD. ALL MUST BE BAPTIZED TO BEGIN THEIR MEMBERSHIP IN GOD’S KINGDOM. JUST LIKE CHRIST WAS BAPTIZED TO FULFILL A RIGHTEOUSNESS. TO SHOW US THE WAY. TO BE THE PERFECT EXAMPLE. @30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour? @31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. WE SIN. @32 If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die. LOGIC AGAIN. @33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. OUR WORDS CAN CONDEMN US. WILL CONDEMN US BECAUSE WE ARE FLAWED /FLESH. @34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame. YOU KNOW OF GOD AND ARE STILL SINNING. STOP IT. @35 But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? @36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: @37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: @38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body. ALL LIVING THINGS HAVE THEIR OWN KIND OF BODY. @39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. SAME. @40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. NOW WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE UNIVERSE AND THE ULTIMATE REWARDS. @41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. ALL BORN IN THIS LIFE WILL INHERIT A KINGDOM OF GLORY. A MANSION APPROPRIATE TO OUR LIFESTYLE AND FAITH. @42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown incorruption; it is raised in incorruption: OUR PERFECT SPIRITS CAME DOWN BY BIRTH TO BE @FLESH-CORRUPTION / DECAY / DIE. BUT OUR RESURRECTED BODIES WILL BE PERFECT AND NEVER DIE. @43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: SAME. @44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. OUR SPIRIT IS PUT IN A BODY WHEN WE ARE BORN. WE HAVE BOTH. A SOUL IS A BODY AND A SPIRIT. WE ARE WHOLE, COMPLETE WHEN JOINED SPIRIT AND BODY. @45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. ADAM RECEIVED A BODY. CHRIST HAD POWER OVER DEATH

BECAUSE HE WAS A GOD-JEHOVAH WITH A MISSION TO PERFORM TO BRING TO PASS THE FATHER’S PLAN. @46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. WE HAVE A VEIL BLOCKING OUR MEMORY OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE WITH OUR HEAVENLY FATHER. SO WHEN WE THINK BACK WE DON’T REMEMBER. @47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. @48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. @49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. HEY, YOU GUYS! JUST LIKE WE HAVE A BODY AND WERE BORN TO THIS EARTH, THERE IS A LIFE AFTERWARDS. HEAVEN IS THE REAL PURPOSE FOR THIS EARTH. THIS IS JUST A STAGE, THE ONLY ONE WE KNOW, BUT THERE IS ANOTHER STAGE AS REAL AS THIS ONE WHERE JESUS IS RIGHT NOW! @50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. @51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, @52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. @53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. @54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. ALL WILL BE RESURRECTED. @55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? HAH, HAH, CHRIST WINS! @56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. BUT SIN HURTS US. THE LAW, THE COMMANDMENTS

EMPOWER US. @57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victorythrough our Lord Jesus Christ. YOU AND I PAUL, BOTH CAN CHEER WITH THIS ONE! @58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. NO GOOD WORKS WILL GO UNREWARDED IN THE NEXT LIFE! FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS THERE WILL YOU HEART BE ALSO. @SO OUR BODIES ARE MADE OF DUST, EARTH, ELEMENTS WHICH WILL RETURN TO THE EARTH. BUT SOME OF THEM WILL BE OURS FOREVER WHEN WE ARE RESURRECTED. OUR SPIRITS ARE MADE OF A MATTER MORE FINE. OUR SPIRITUAL BODIES ENTER PHYSICAL BODIES WHEN WE COME DOWN TO THIS WORLD FROM HEAVEN. OUR SPIRIT LEAVES OUR BODY WHEN WE DIE. UNLESS WE GET TWINKLED AT CHRIST’S 2ND COMING WHEN A BODY WOULD JUST BE CHANGED. @WE HAVE A CHAPTER ELABORATING THE DEGREES OF GLORY IN THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS 76. CELESTIAL, TERESTRIAL, TELESTIAL. AND IN EACH OF THOSE DEGREES OF GLORY THERE WELL BE INFINITE VARIATIONS MATCHING US.  AND THE 3 MEMBERS OF THE GODHEAD WILL BE AVAILBLE IN THE CELESTIAL KINGDOM. THE SAVIOR AND HOLY GHOST IN THE TERESTRIAL AND THE HOLY GHOST ONLY IN THE TELESTIAL. @Well Paul, that is my take on the chapter. What is yours? @Thank you for this opportunity.~~@ gby-bltpjs-vj

Jewish dentist Irving Cohen

Preface: I lived in Schenectady, New York for a couple of weeks in '69. We ended up attending Schoharie valley school after we moved to a farm in upper state New York. I attended a scout camp there on a lake where I carved my and my girl friend's initials in a heart in a number of the pine trees in that forest. cv & vj (It must have been poorly planned to have had all that wasted time on my hands.) We drove past dentist Irving Cohen's house on a main thoroughfare between towns. Dad would point it out every time and say that there was a famous jew who had converted to mormon.

So now, 7/2015 my friend Bob Davis is dating his divorced daughter. She is a famous hairdresser named Emily. Her daughter is marrying in Florida this fall.

This story is totally awesome. But Bob reassures me he had a very dark side. Perhaps that dark side was the practice my father promulgated.

I love this story. I would love it to be totally true!

Dr. Irving H Cohen
B'nai Shalom officer 1980s to 1998

Born an orthodox Jew, Irving Cohen was converted to the gospel with the help of a fellow officer while serving with the armed forces in Korea. This involved his making a radical change in the attitudes and understandings that were a part of his traditional background.

Both as stake missionary and high councilor he continued to bear a fervent testimony on all possible occasions and this has resulted in many other conversions to the gospel.

A dentist by profession, Dr. Cohen lived in Schenectady, New York.

He authored "Jews of the Torah" in 1967, and "The authors of Genesis as explained by the Colophon System Hardcover" in 1966. Below is his moving story of how he found the true Jewish Messiah in the person of Jesus Christ, and of some of the trials and joys this discovery brought him.We have an MP3 of Irvine Cohen's voice recording this testimony.

Irving Cohen Testimony - Text
In the Words of Irving Cohen:

I was born into an orthodox Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. [2002] My parents had five children. I was their third child and first son. Like so many of the Jewish boys at the time, I attended Hebrew school and was prepared for my bar-mitzvahthe ceremony held for a Jewish boy when he reaches the age of thirteen and is considered a man by the Jewish community and he can then stand before the congregation and say certain prayers.

Right after my bar-mitzvah, as I continued to have my Hebrew lessons, I asked my rabbi: "Why is it that the Jewish people haven't had a prophet for two thousand five hundred years? I don't expect a hundred prophets, maybe not even ten prophets. But I do expect one prophet. Surely there must be one Jew somewhere who is worthy to be a 'nauvey' (prophet)!"

My rabbi could only shrug his shoulders at the question. I then took the problem to my wonderful father and he, too, could not answer the question. All the evidence for the fact that there would be no more prophets referred to the words of a Psalm (22:1): "Eli, Eli." "Eli, Eli" has the ring and cry of how the Jewish people have fallen away from God's graces and how they have been persecuted, burned, and spat upon throughout the ages, and how they yearn to be back again as God's chosen people.

I entered college a few years after my bar-mitzvah, and one of my classes was a course in philosophy. All term long we argued, "Is there or isn't there a God?" At the end of the term, each person in the class was required to write a thesis. My thesis was that God once lived but had died. I reasoned in this way: Supposing a great architect constructs a building. The building stands five hundred years, but the man who created it, the architect, dies at the age of one hundred. Somebody else comes along two hundred years later and discovers the building. In studying it he realizes that it took an intelligence to create the building. Similarly, I realized that it took an intelligence to create the world. But since the Jewish people haven't had a prophet for two thousand five hundred years and the Christian people basically can't claim a prophet for almost two thousand years, and since the world is in a horrible condition, the God who created this world must have gone off and died. I was sure that if he still had control over it, he wouldn't let it be in its present state.

So much for my philosophy! But as the years went by I tried, at least, to do the right thing by my fellowmen.

In the course of time I became a dentist. In 1953 I received a call to serve my country and I complied gladly. I was made acting company commander for one hundred dentists at Fort Sam Houston. My platoon leader, a dentist from Phoenix, Arizona, named Junius Gibbons, was somehow different from anybody else around him. Here were ninety-nine other dentists, and this one young dentist stood out head and shoulders above the rest. Not that he was taller; but his character shone forth. I said to myself, "This guy is different, and I want to get to know him so I can see what makes him tick." Later on he told me that he had had similar thoughts about me and had watched for the opportunity to approach me.

One day we were waiting to be interviewed by the commanding general, and Dr. Gibbons said to me, "Captain, what religion do you profess?"

I said, "I don't profess any religion; however, I am not ashamed to say that I am of Jewish background. But I don't believe in Judaism. I have searched Christianity and I don't believe in Christianity eithernot the Christianity that I've found. I have also studied the other religions of the world, and I have come to the conclusion that religion is a man-made situation. If I'm going to be religious, it is not going to be in a man-made religion. I want to find God and worship in his religion, if there be such a thing."

He took me by the hand and said, "I'm a fellow Israelite."

I said, "You mean you're a Jew?"

He said, "No, no. If you are a Jew, you are probably of the tribe of Judah, and I'm of the tribe of Joseph. These are two tribes within the House of Israel." He continued to pump my hand.

He stunned me by that remark. I went home, and I said, "You know, I met a fellow who claims he is of the house of Israel, and he is not Jewish. How do you account for that?"

"Oh, don't pay any attention to him," was the reply. "Everybody is trying to get into the act!"

But I asked myself right then and there: "Does Gibbons know something that I don't know?"

Junius Gibbons and I were among those assigned to the Far East theater of operations, the Korean conflict, and we met next at Ft. Lewis, Washington. I saw him at breakfast. We were confined to the base, because we were leaving within twenty-four hours.

I said to him, "I'd like to hear more about what you have to say about the Israelites, the Jews, and the tribe of Joseph."

He was very anxious to help me. He said, "Fine. After breakfast let's find a little quiet place where we'll have some privacy, and we'll go over some of the Bible."

After we found our spot, Dr. Gibbons told me, among other things, that he had another book, similar to the Bible, called the Book of Mormon, and that he believed that book to be scripture also. And he told me a little about the origin of the book.

I said, "You mean to tell me that you had a prophet by the name of Joseph Smith, and he had the courage, the temerity, and the audacity to write these things in a book?"

"Joseph Smith didn't write them, he only translated them," he replied. "But here's the book."

I said, "You know, I'd like to have a copy of that book."

"I'll give it to you on one condition"

"Okay," I said, and I reached for my wallet.

"No, no. That's not the condition," my friend Gibbons said, handing me the book. "Just promise me you'll read it."

I made the promise. By this time it must have been about one o'clock in the morning. My plane took off about 3 a.m., so I said goodbye to Dr. Gibbons and, taking his book, I went off for Japan on the way to Korea.

When I arrived in Korea, I didn't feel that I wanted to do what the other officers were doinggambling, drinking, carousing. I had this book, the Book of Mormon. Reading it was worthwhile to me, but I was not about to believe that it came from the source it claimed. I thought I could disprove it by finding obvious errors, so I spent my time reading.

As I read the Book of Mormon from cover to cover, there were parts that I didn't absorb too much. I decided I'd better compare it with the Bible, so I asked one of my chaplain friends for a Bible, which he gave to me.

Now I read through the Old and New Testaments for the first time in my adult life. I was looking for errors, for contradictions between the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I couldn't find any the first time through, so I knew I'd just have to try harder. I read the Book of Mormon for the second time, and this time I began to understand a little more about what was going on. Then I decided I had better read the Bible through again, and this I did, [p.60] from cover to cover, for the second time. And then I went back to the Book of Mormon for a third time, and within the last chapter I read this:

Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that you should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord has been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down unto the time that you shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things. (Moroni 10:3-5)

Obviously that is written for a Christian. Here I am, Jewish. So I would like to reword verses 4 and 5 for my Jewish readers.

"And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that you would ask God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the name of the Messiah, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in the Messiah, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Ruach Elohim (literally translated, 'the Spirit of God,' and in Christian terminology, 'the Holy Ghost'). And by the power of the Ruach Elohim (or the Spirit of God, or the Holy Ghost) you may know the truth of all things."

This hit me, and I said, "If this is a book of God, then Irving Cohen is entitled to a revelation." But I had two problems.

Problem No. 1: The book said I had to ask in the name of Jesus Christ, and I didn't know whether or not Jesus Christ was the Messiah.

Problem No. 2: I could say a prayer for bread, a prayer for food, but there was no prayer in Hebrew covering the Book of Mormon. I was stuck!

At this time I was the regimental dental surgeon. My regiment had been moved down to the Isle of Koji where we were [p.61] guarding the prisoners picked up on the 38th parallel. For some reason a great many operations were coming up and I didn't have enough supplies. I went to my colonel, and I said, "I need supplies desperately. I have a friend over in Pusan (on the southernmost tip of Korea), and if you will give me a three-day pass, I will get my supplies." He granted me permission for a three-day leave.

At Pusan, I went to see my friend, Junius Gibbons. He gave me my supplies and asked me, "By the way, did you keep your promise?"

"Yes, I did," I replied proudly. "I read it three times, not once." And then I told him about my two problems.

He said, "All right, Irving, I'll tell you what we'll do. Let's go through the Old Testament, the book of your people, and cover all of the prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah, and then see where we go from there."

The Old Testament is a record of my ancestors, and the Jews still believe in the coming of the Messiah, so I agreed. We began with Deuteronomy chapter 8, verses 15 and 18; then we read from the Prophets, and finally we came to the 53rd chapter of Isaiah. I am going to change some of the words here again; I'm not going to take any of them out, but I am going to add a few words for clarity. Since the Old Testament is the book of the Jews, wherever it says "we" or "us," it means the Jews; wherever it reads "he" or "him," it refers to the Messiah.

"Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he [the Messiah] shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he [the Messiah] hath no form nor comeliness; and when we [the Jews] shall see him, there is no beauty that we [the Jews] should desire him.

"He [the Messiah] is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we [the Jews] hid as it were our faces from him; he [the Messiah] was despised, and we [the Jews] esteemed him not.

"Surely he [the Messiah] hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we [the Jews] did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

"But he [the Messiah] was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we [the Jews] are healed.

"All we [the Jews] like sheep have gone astray; we [the Jews] have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him [the Messiah] the iniquity of us all.

"He [the Messiah] was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he [the Messiah] is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he [the Messiah] openeth not his mouth.

"He [the Messiah] was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he [the Messiah] was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people [the Jews] was he stricken." (Isaiah 53:1-8)

As we arrived at about this point in the Old Testament, it seemed to me that a brilliant light started to come into the room where we were. I am not able to explain how it happened; all I know is that it did happen. And with this light came the Ruach Elohim, or the Spirit of God. Something leaped inside of me, causing me to jump up, and I shouted to my friend, Junius, "I've got it! I've got it!"

He asked, "What have you got?"

"I know now that Jesus is the Messiah!"

I found myself sobbing with joy and relief, and, for a few minutes we were silent. My mind raced. "Why do the Jews not believe in Jesus as the Messiah?" I asked myself. Because they are taught this idea by their parents. Were their parents there at the time? No. How did they know what was right and what was wrong? They failed to believe because they were also taught not to believe. Were their grandparents there? No.

But because somebody made a mistake two thousand years ago, do I have to close my eyes and make the same mistake? In college I had always been taught to recognize truth. My parents had always taught me to be truthful and to defend truth. If God reveals to me that Jesus is the Messiah, am I supposed to close my eyes and go along the wrong path just to be agreeable with my mistaken ancestors? NO!

In New Testament times the original followers of Christ were all Jews. They could be compared to the radical element, while those who did not believe in Jesus as the Messiah remained the [p.63] conservatives. As the years went by, those who accepted Christ became known by the new name, "Christians." The conservatives kept the old identification, Jews. But both of these groups had originally been Jews. And if one of my "Conservative" ancestors two thousand years ago could not believe that Jesus was the Messiah, then do all of his descendants have to follow that same tradition? Suppose Jesus is the Messiah. The question is, are we, the Jews of this generation, going to be big enough to accept him?

The Jewish people have an expression which they use in the synagogue: "Vawohovtah adonoi eloechchaw, becall levovchaw, vebecall nafshechaw, becall moadechaw," which in English means: "Love the Lord with all thy heart, with all thy might, with all thy mind, and with all thy soul."

Now that I knew that Jesus was the Messiah, I did love him with all my heart and soul, and with this love, the Ruach Elohim bore testimony to me (and still does) that indeed the Messiah is Jesus Christ. But I still didn't know how to pray. So Junius said to me, "If you want to pray, you begin by getting down on your knees."

"Just a minute. I'm a Jew, and Jews never get on their knees, not even on the Day of Atonement."

"But," he said, "if it's good enough for a prophet, it's good enough for Irving Cohen. Right? The Old Testament tells us that Daniel 'kneeled upon his kneesand prayed, and gave thanks before his God,' even after King Darius had decreed that anyone who did so would be cast into a den of lions." (Daniel 6:10.)

And I agreed that if it were good enough for a prophet, it should be good enough for Irving Cohen. So Irving Cohen got down on his knees.

Then Junius said, "And when you pray, address the one to whom you are praying; after all, God is your Father."

The Jewish people pray "Auvenu Malkaynu," a chant meaning "Our Father, our King." "God is our Father," I thought, "and what righteous father doesn't want to hear his child talk to him directly?"

Junius said, "You address your Father in heaven." And then he taught me somethingsomething I had never known before. He said, "You have to thank God for what you already have, because unless you appreciate what you already have, why should God give you anything more? See, he'd be spoiling you." (A wise parent doesn't want to spoil his child.)

It was at that time that I started to appreciate my blessings, which I had never done so fully before; I had not been properly aware of them. Junius said, "If you appreciate your blessings, you are in a position to ask for more, as long as it is done in righteousness. So then you ask whether or not this Book of Mormon is true; and then do it in the name of Jesus, the Messiah, Amen."

I said good night to my buddy, went into my own room, and then for the first time in my lifealone, by myselfI went down on my knees, and I made a prayer something like this: "Oh God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, forgive me for not knowing better in my youth. I am only interested in doing the right thing now. I don't want a man-made religion. I want a God-made religion. So I'll make you a proposition: If you will show me that this Book of Mormon is true and that the Mormon religion is your religion upon the earth, I'll take every opportunity to teach this to others. On the other hand, if this Book of Mormon is a false book, and you reveal this to me, I'll expose these Mormons as a bunch of frauds up and down the earth. And I say this in the name of Jesus, my Messiah. Amen."

I don't just believe the Book of Mormon is true; I know it. It was shown to me that night that God lives; that Jesus is the Messiah; that there are entities called angels; that there are prophets upon the earth restored to the house of Israelnot just to the Jews, but to the rest of the tribes of Israel as well.

The Book of Mormon, from the tribe of Joseph, is another record equal to the Bible, which is from the tribe of Judah. Now I understood what Ezekiel meant when he wrote:

The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying, Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick [p.65] and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions; And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. (Ezekiel 37:15-17)

In Ezekiel's days they didn't have books. Instead they took a piece of parchment, wrote on it, and wrapped it around a stick, and this they called a "stick." The stick of Judah which Ezekiel mentions is the Bible, written principally by Jews, descendants of Judah the son of Jacob. The stick of Joseph is the Book of Mormon, written by descendants of Judah's brother, Joseph, in America.

As soon as I knew the Book of Mormon to be truly a book of God, I immediately knew that there were troubled days ahead. Nevertheless, I had to keep my promise. That meant joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and devoting my life to telling others about the gospel.

Upon being released from the service, I finally returned to my home in Brooklyn, New York, where my Jewish wife gave me an ultimatum: "Either give up your Christian Mormon nonsense, or give me a divorce."

I didn't want my wife to divorce me, and I didn't want to lose my infant daughter. I also did not want to go contrary to God's will. I realized that I was in a real dilemma. What was I to do?

Then the thought came that I should follow the same pattern that I had learned. "Ask and it shall be given." I went to my knees and asked Heavenly Father what to do. I needed guidance. As I was thus in prayer, it seemed that a distinct voice began to speak to me, and with it came the power of the Ruach Elohim or Holy Ghost.

I immediately picked up a pencil and began to write that which I heard. It is recorded as follows:

"My son, when I created this earth and put the human family upon it, I did so upon the principle of free agency. Therefore, if your wife insists upon exercising her right to do so, don't attempt to prevent her. However, let the record show that she obtained the divorce.

"Further, whatever you give up in my behalf I will return it upon your head, seven-fold. Since you will lose your little girl, the future will return seven for one.

"I, the Lord God, further promise you, that upon reaching the age of maturity, your daughter will leave her mother and come and join her father."

Well, the years passed, and during that time my Jewish wife did obtain the divorce, and I remarried. This new union has now produced the seven children which were promised plus one more. And after sixteen and one-half years of separation, my daughter came to me in July, 1970.

I bear my testimony that the Book of Mormon is true, that God lives, and that he will answer the prayers of anyone, provided that that person wants to do his will-not seventy per cent of his will, not eighty per cent of his will, not even ninety per cent of his will, but one hundred per cent of his will. This is the prerequisite for us as it was for Moses. If you are willing to do his will one hundred per cent, you are entitled to receive an answer to your prayers, just as I did and still do. For this I am humbly grateful. This testimony I bear in the name of Jesus, your Messiah and my Messiah. Amen.

Bro. Beacom is on his last leg so it is time to enjoy some rainbow trout from New Castle reservoir where the state record wiper was caught last year. 11lbs!

Monday, 1:56pm

This most friendly brother really knew how to draw me out at the FHC today. And once I have been drawn out there isn't anything I wouldn't do for you. (jk) Even run home and get some frozen rainbows out of the freezer and put them in the FHC fridge before you get off.  So many of us old single men have little conversation each day. It is even nice to get a Hello from Sister Moon. (And be called two of her favorite guys.) I love Sundays because I get to talk and visit. Here it is Monday and I got to talk and visit as well. Thank you Brother Green or Beacom. People whose brain works are so delightful to converse with.

1- I am so proud of you for joining the church in your 20's! What a powerful, independent decision! And it was definitely taking the challenging high, High, HIGH road. Try being an active Mormon some time if you don't believe me.

2- Your sense of humor is so enjoyable. My best teenage buddy had no dad but the most hilarious, entertaining banter and sense of humor. Glenn Register. He is too busy to maintain a friendship but I would have followed him anywhere and tried.

3- I am so concerned for your heart attacks. 3 so far! I can see why you don't think you will make 80.

4- You are so genuine and candid. You have told me things like pityfish and bass fishing but never caught a trout. Possibly getting  lost on the way to Otter Creek and having to lie about where you had been all day. Up at 5am and gone fishing when visiting your daughter. Ocean stripers and fly fishing on fresh water in Mass.

5- If I can brighten your day in some small way it might remind you of the way you just brightened mine.

I watched the beginning of 3 Youtube videos about how to fry fish/rainbow trout. This guy is ugly but simple!  You can take or leave the butter and dill.  I have cooked up about 10 pans of fish this summer and tried a different way each time. I even used hot dog relish once. Pepper and lemon or lime is the best in my opinion.

i buen provecho!              to your health!  as they would say in Quezaltenango, Guatemala
