How many hours a week do you spend serving Heavenly Father?

Saturday4/21/18 Good afternoon Brandon, Results, did I use the 6 copies? Nope. I checked with Janice before class and she said not enough time. Plus, John was not there. I can wait until he returns. I now have my ammo. @ Janice got a priesthood blessing for her back pain 2 weeks ago and it hasn’t improved. In fact her left foot is now numb and although she can lift her right toes, she can’t lift her left ones. This sciatica symptom she has never had before and it is scary. Her left leg is 1.5” shorter and that causes back problems. No matter the pain she still taught Thursday night and she was as excellent as ever. Eeyore Rex sat next to me. Some weeks he doesn’t say a word recently, but last night he was alive! He hates the word love. It’s a trash word he says. Rather than say God is love, he would rather we say God is truth. Rex doesn’t love anyone, not even God. He has learned to respect others and God. He believes big time that we are here to be tested and that we will be tested to the max. He believes that love of God is obedience: If ye love me keep my commandments. And he is not very good at keeping all the commandments but he tries. He will not own being a righteous follower of Christ but admits struggling along and being a normal Joe. The class was astounded at this confession. In the past he has argued and debated but never confessed. He must have been feeling safe. :) Janice and I just visited in amazement after class. He admitted to probably being “jaded” because of his profession as a drug rehab counselor/ psychologist. You may remember how frustrated I was with him a couple of years ago and the 2 page letter I wrote him and delivered explaining we were all “walking wounded.” He seemed to appreciate it and has called me his friend ever since. But he has these attacks of disagreement in class that shake us up and make us defend. He has a deep bass voice, speaks softly and slowly but with such articulation that puts me in envy. Brains aren’t everything Brandon! Obedience is! @ @@

Good Saturday morning Bishop,

HQ sent a note inviting all to a Web Indexing workshop next Wednesday. I prepared it as a handout to go in our sacrament meeting program. It is 1/2 page.

On the other side I wrote a little letter.

Because I used Ted Fifield's name in the letter I ran it by him and he enjoyed it and agreed. He was happy to give his permission. Brenda F liked it as well. You may know that Ted has been one of the HPgroups monthly teachers so we have gotten to know him quite well.

Here are the two notes.

Dear Bloomington Hills 2nd Ward members, Vern here.
How many hours a day or week do you spend serving Heavenly Father?
I don’t spend any unless I plan on it.
I know some of you spend hours serving him everyday. You do it as part of your earthly mission. Ted Fifield says he doesn’t know how to serve. You can’t get any more honest than that!
Todd May teases him that when he is still alive during the millennium he will be stuck at a computer indexing. Ted groans when he hears this. That does not sound like heaven to Ted!
I almost agree with Ted. It was hard to learn to index. But now I know how. Have you ever heard it is easy once you know how? That is not true in this case. There is still difficult cursive handwriting to figure out. I call them riddles. Do you like riddles? Bishop Salmon, emeritus, taught me how to love riddles at scout camp a number of years ago. You just change them into a game of 20 questions.
You would not believe all the computers that are available at FS center. I am available everyday until noon. Come riddle with me!

Hello wonderful BH2nd Ward missionaries,

1- Parker Boyce was brought to the front and approved to become a priest. The bishop had to do it after the sacrament because he has been coming in late. Yay Thatcher! Yay Parker!

2- Elder Ryan Hoppie says that they are limited from using cars when there is a snow storm. Only foot travel this last week! This will sound funny: They want to protect the cars from damage.

3- We met as a Melchizedek Priesthood Quorum for our 2nd week! Incumbent President Cameron Tolman is still president.
Chris Robb 1st Coun
Josh Borgeson 2nd Couns
Jesse Bird secretary

They did a trick on us. They wanted to greet us individually so they had us all leave the room without telling us why. Then they let us back in shaking their hands, one at a time.

4- Hoppie's will be changing houses in the ward this Saturday!

5- Cameron did an outstanding job of explaining the new ministering program: You still home teach your families every month and you minister in addition to it! It is a step up. Become aware of their needs and be ready to report each quarter.

6- Our new RS presidency did sacrament meeting today. It was glorious. So spiritual, so personal.

President Tawna Buckway
1st Coun Ronda Taylor
2nd Coun Maria Bradley

7- The scouts are raising money for a new scout trailer. This was the last week to contribute. They got a good deal from Alan Averett and sold the old one to help defray costs. $2500

8- I am the ward indexing consultant. Fits me perfect. I go to FS everyday and work. I have invited everyone who wants to learn to meet me over there before noon. I'm still music chairman.

9- Arbitrating took 10 times as long as reviewing. Reviewing will so speed things up! The Web Program is magnificent. They improve it almost every week. Sometimes it gives you a scary message when there is a glitch in the system. Just close and reload.

10- Jesse Bird said he liked the humor in my letter to the ward that was inserted with the bishop's permission into the programs today:

Well wonderful missionaries, God bless you in your efforts!

Reporting\vern jensen <phonev6@gmail.com>\3:51 PM (1 hour ago)\to Patricia, Kent\
Hello Sister Patricia Parker,
Little did we know that Ronda would be speaking in sacrament meeting today when we had our discussion at ENFHE Monday night. I did not hear any evidence of our discussion in her talk. I was well nourished in sacrament meeting today.
Thank you for daring to stand by me in choir.
I have been pondering something you said at Empty Nesters: “I sure hope we are not expected to report every little thing we do in ministering.”
I understand where you are coming from. You even hinted at this scripture:
1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 ¶ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall rewardthee openly.

I have seen a different perspective. We don't have to worry about people standing on the corner and praying to be seen of men, no one dares to be seen praying! I believe because no reporting has been required for 5 years in Elders Quorum very little home teaching has even been done.
And consider this. When we report to our priesthood leader/ RS leader we are not doing it before men, we are doing it before an authorized servant. Just one single person is being reported to. We are not calling out our score like we did in math class so the teacher can write it down and the whole class hears!
Now the simple right answer and reassurance to your issue is: we are to determine needs and report those needs.
When I told of my struggles to try and meet the needs of the Nathan & Audrie Bird family did it seem I was bragging and desired to be seen of men? I hope not. I so appreciated your email reply reassuring me: “I find your openness refreshing.  And your scriptural insight is worth sharing. No apologies necessary.  It was a lively discussion.” I admit I get intense at times. And I probably share more than I should. I also have that fight with personal pride at times and a desire to be seen of men. Thank heavens I don't have to stand on street corners with my head bowed and reciting prayers for hours on end!

I believe we can be inspired by the efforts of those around us. I was inspired by those that Maria Bradley told reached out to them in their basement flood. I was inspired by Ronda's efforts to help Patty and her kids. I was inspired by Tawna's efforts to bless Armenia. Should they have kept those efforts secret?

I started this letter by saying I had been pondering your comment. To tell the truth I have been pondering this concept for decades. I want to do what is right. So what is right?

Thank you for bringing up that question and allowing me to consider it again with my current understanding.

Please feel invited to expound as well.

Thoughtful,
Vern
Tuesday, 4/24 Hello Brandon, We had 20 of the Quorum say one thing about themselves Sunday. As you know this was just our second week as a single quorum. HP & E combined forever more! President Cameron Tolman inserted questions whenever he wanted even though Chris Robb was leading the discussion. Sam Hales had heart surgery last month and they went in though both his femoral veins, groin, one with a camera and one with the tools and put in a pig valve in his heart. He also has a pacemaker which they sped up compensate, he said. Dave Hughes admitted he has had lifetime heart problems and has one pig valve and one bovine valve. He also begged us to stop buying from Amazon.com. They have the contract for the deliveries and some of the poor postal workers have to stay and deliver on Sunday’s just for Amazon!  I was shocked last year when my package arrived on Sunday! @ I was so excited for the special treatment the new Elder’s Q presidency is giving their new callings! Having us all leave and then reenter just so they could greet us and shake our hand was weird but significant. Having us introduce ourselves is commemorative. I am pleased and hopeful. This might make you smile: I texted CameronT Sunday evening and told him I had written all the names of those who had introduced themselves in my journal and that if he wanted me to write a list on the board next week so we can catch everyone else I can. :) @ In general priesthood meeting the first presidency speak to the brethren one by one in order. That is how the priesthood meeting concludes. On Sunday morning session they did the same this time! HBE is no longer 1st counselor! He is 2nd counselor. I wonder how that changes his responsibilities? @ When I have had nightmares or been unable to sleep in the middle of the night or early morning hours I have played those three talks and recited them in my mind. Here is the one from HBE. I am going to comment through it. APRIL 2018 | His Spirit to Be with You
I pray with all my heart that you will hear the voice of the Spirit, which is sent to you so generously.

My brothers and sisters, I am grateful for the opportunity to speak to you on the Lord’s Sabbath, in the general conference of His Church, at this Easter season. I thank our Heavenly Father for the gift of His Beloved Son, who came voluntarily to earth to be our Redeemer. I am grateful to know that He atoned for our sins and rose in the Resurrection. Every day I am blessed to know that, because of His Atonement, I may someday be resurrected to live forever in a loving family.

I know those things by the only way any of us can know them. The Holy Ghost has spoken to my mind and heart that they are true—not just once but often. I have needed that continuing comfort. We all experience tragedy during which we need the reassurance of the Spirit. I felt it one day as I stood with my father in a hospital. We watched my mother take a few shallow breaths—and then no more. As we looked on her face, she was smiling as the pain left. After a few silent moments, my father spoke first. He said, “A little girl has gone home.” [“not just once but often. I have needed that continuing comfort.” Have you ever wondered how many times you can pray and ask if the Book of Mormon is true and get an answer? As many times as we want! This was a new concept to me in bomc last month. We are not expected to feel the answer once and then live the rest of our life without further reassurance. Relief-v]

He said it softly. He seemed to be at peace. He was reporting something he knew was true. He quietly began to gather Mother’s personal things. He went out into the hospital hallway to thank each of the nurses and doctors who had ministered to her for days.

My father had the companionship of the Holy Ghost at that moment to feel, to know, and to do what he did that day. He had received the promise, as many have: “That they may have his Spirit to be with them” (D&C 20:79).[v- I told Gayelinn’72 last week that the gifts of the Aaronic priesthood were more important to me than the Melchizedek priesthood: 1 faith, 2 repentance, 3 forgiveness, 4 baptism. The bishop is the president of the Aaronic priesthood he helps people repent and offers forgiveness when it is time to start taking the sacrament again. I told G that if I can be forgiven that is enough for me.]

My hope today is to increase your desire and your ability to receive the Holy Ghost. Remember, He is the third member of the Godhead. The Father and the Son are resurrected beings. The Holy Ghost is a person of spirit. (See D&C 130:22.) It is your choice whether to receive Him and welcome Him into your heart and mind. [“It is your choice whether”. . . Agency, it is always agency. No force. Instead desire!-v]

The conditions on which we can receive that supernal blessing are made clear in the words that are spoken every week but perhaps do not always sink into our hearts and minds. To have the Spirit sent to us, we must “always remember” the Savior and “keep his commandments” (D&C 20:77). [v- two things.]

This time of year helps us remember the Savior’s sacrifice and His rising from the tomb a resurrected being. Many of us hold images of those scenes in our memories. I once stood with my wife outside a tomb in Jerusalem. Many believe that it was the tomb from which the crucified Savior emerged as a resurrected and living God.

The respectful guide that day motioned with his hand and said to us, “Come, see an empty tomb.”

We stooped to enter. We saw a stone bench against a wall. But into my mind came another picture, as real as what we saw that day. It was of Mary, who was left by the Apostles at the tomb. That is what the Spirit let me see and even hear in my mind, as clearly as if I had been there:

“But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

“And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

“And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

“And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

“Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

“Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

“Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God” (John 20:11–17).[“ But into my mind came another picture, as real as what we saw that day.” v- What do you think he had to do for that real vision/picture come into his mind? Do you think he has those verses memorized? Do you think he has recited them over and over again in his life?]
I have prayed to be allowed to feel something of what Mary felt at the tomb and what two other disciples felt on the road to Emmaus as they walked with the resurrected Savior, thinking Him a visitor to Jerusalem:

“But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

“And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

“And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

“And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:29–32).

Some of those words were repeated in a sacrament meeting I attended more than 70 years ago. In those days sacrament meetings were held in the evening. It was dark outside. The congregation sang these familiar words. I had heard them many times. But my lasting memory is of a feeling on one particular night. It draws me closer to the Savior. Perhaps if I recite the words, it will come to all of us again:

Abide with me; ’tis eventide.

The day is past and gone;

The shadows of the evening fall;

The night is coming on.

Within my heart a welcome guest,

Within my home abide.

Abide with me; ’tis eventide.

Thy walk today with me

Has made my heart within me burn,

As I communed with thee.

Thy earnest words have filled my soul

And kept me near thy side.

O Savior, stay this night with me;

Behold, ’tis eventide.

O Savior, stay this night with me;

Behold, ’tis eventide.1 [“I have prayed to be allowed to feel something of what Mary felt at the tomb and what two other disciples felt. . .” Aha! Not only has he pondered those words and stories and imagined them, he has asked!-v]

More precious than a memory of events is the memory of the Holy Ghost touching our hearts and His continuing affirmation of truth. More precious than seeing with our eyes or remembering words spoken and read is recalling the feelings that accompanied the quiet voice of the Spirit. Rarely I have felt it exactly as the travelers on the road to Emmaus did—as a soft but unmistakable burning in the heart. More often it is a feeling of light and quiet assurance. [Uncommon, Rarely. . . but more often -v]
We have the priceless promise of the Holy Ghost as a companion, and we also have true directions on how to claim that gift. These words are said by the Lord’s authorized servant with his hands on our head: “Receive the Holy Ghost.” At that moment you and I have the assurance He will be sent. But our obligation is to choose to open our hearts to receive the ministration of the Spirit over a lifetime. [For me it really has been a livetime. I’m still seldom sure!-v]

The experiences of the Prophet Joseph Smith offer a guide. He began and continued his ministry with the decision that his own wisdom was not sufficient to know what course he should pursue. He chose to be humble before God.

Next, Joseph chose to ask of God. He prayed in faith that God would answer. The answer came when he was a young boy. Those messages came when he needed to know how God would have His Church established. The Holy Ghost comforted and guided him throughout his life.

He obeyed inspiration when it was difficult. For instance, he received direction to send the Twelve to England when he needed them most. He sent them. [Susan Easton Black described this in one of her lectures. It is so strange Brandon. Why would he do this?-v]

He accepted correction and comfort from the Spirit when he was imprisoned and the Saints were terribly oppressed. [ imagine if we did not have the D&C 120’s-v] And he obeyed when he went down the road to Carthage even as he knew he faced mortal danger.

The Prophet Joseph set an example for us of how to receive continual spiritual direction and comfort through the Holy Ghost.

The first choice he made was to be humble before God.

The second was to pray with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

The third was to obey exactly. Obedience may mean to move quickly. It may mean to prepare. Or it may mean to wait in patience for further inspiration. [v-I like this]
And the fourth is to pray to know the needs and hearts of others and how to help them for the Lord. Joseph prayed for the Saints in distress when he was in prison. It has been my opportunity to observe the prophets of God as they pray, ask for inspiration, receive direction, and act on it. [v-this part is so sweet Brandon. This is service, caring about others, not just ourselves! You know that I reach out regularly. I saw Janese and Russ Figgins and their tan poodle, Bean, at the golf course last night. She thanked me for the email I sent March 29 when she was in Primary Children’s hospital with her 16 year old daughter with a nerve virus that had made her lose her motor coordination.]]

I have seen how often their prayers are about the people they love and serve. Their concern for others seems to open their hearts to receive inspiration. That can be true for you.

Inspiration will help us minister to others for the Lord. You have seen that in your experience, as I have. My bishop once said to me—at a time when my wife was under great strain in her own life—“Every time I hear of someone in the ward who needs help, when I get there to help, I find that your wife was there ahead of me. How does she do that?” [v- he admits that she was under great strain! I am no longer under great strain. I hardly have a care in the world. But that was not true 30 years ago!]

She is like all who are great ministers in the Lord’s kingdom. It seems there are two things they do. Great ministers have qualified for the Holy Ghost as a nearly constant companion. And they have qualified for the gift of charity, which is the pure love of Christ. Those gifts have grown in them as they have used them in serving out of love for the Lord. [two gifts-v]

The way in which prayer, inspiration, and love of the Lord work together in our service is described for me perfectly in these words:

“If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

“Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

“At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:14–21). [Where was the service in those verses Brandon? Hard to find isn’t it!-v]

I bear my personal witness that the Father is at this moment aware of you, your feelings, and the spiritual and temporal needs of everyone around you. I bear testimony that the Father and the Son are sending the Holy Ghost to all who have that gift, ask for that blessing, and seek to be worthy of it. Neither the Father, nor the Son, nor the Holy Ghost force Themselves into our lives. We are free to choose. The Lord has said to all:

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

“To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith” (Revelation 3:20–22).

I pray with all my heart that you will hear the voice of the Spirit, which is sent to you so generously. And I pray that you will open your heart always to receive Him. If you ask with real intent and with faith in Jesus Christ for inspiration, you will receive it in the Lord’s way and in His time. God did that for the young Joseph Smith. He does it today for our living prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. He has placed you in the way of other children of God to serve them for Him. I know that not only by what I have seen with my eyes but more powerfully by what the Spirit has whispered to my heart.

I have felt the love of the Father and of His Beloved Son for all the children of God in the world and for His children in the spirit world. I have felt the comfort and the direction of the Holy Ghost. I pray that you may have the joy of having the Spirit with you as your companion constantly. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
“Inspiration will help us minister to others for the Lord.”-v Wow! Can you see all the angles in that sentence?
“I bear my personal witness that the Father is at this moment aware of you, your feelings, and the spiritual and temporal needs of everyone around you.” I am so glad he is aware of my feelings. I believe he can use my mind and hands as his to meet the needs of others.

“how we can help our members keep. . . especially those two great commandments to love God and our neighbors.”

Saturday 4/7/18 Hello Brandon, I looked up MTC and there are 12 around the world. Man was I shocked! Jackie Salmon is in the Brazil MTC. 2 weeks down, 4 weeks to go. Her clothes are never dry, even when they come back from the dryer. She found she could hang them from the boards above her bed when she sleeps at night to dry them out. I wrote her last week. She seems closer to me than even one of my nieces who served and I followed: Megan Chipman, Rebeka Formica, Rachel Formica. I was telling Gayelinn about it on my way home from FS and kept choking up with tears because I was feeling so strongly. @ How close is the 2nd Coming? Bob Davis guarantees it will be by 2020. Elder Belnap sees the 4 general conference announcements as evidence of its nearness. Not me. If it is before 2050 I will be surprised. But bring it on, I am ready. @ When was the last time we received an earth shaking revelation from the prophet? I think it was when the age of missionaries was changed. You would think I would be used to it by now! @ I read a SLTribune article before conference saying, “You can be sure they won’t say anything significant, they never do.” the day before conference. After conference I just want to stick my tongue out at that author and give them a raspberry! [Blowing a raspberry, strawberry or making a Bronx cheer, is to make a noise that may signify derision, real or feigned. It may also be used in childhood phonemic play either solely by the child or by adults towards a child to encourage imitation to the delight of both parties.] gesture of derision it encapsulates is that of putting one’s thumb to one’s nose and extending the fingers. Waggling them is optional but greatly improves the effectiveness of the insult. The gesture is widespread but names for it vary: cocking a snook is mainly the British name Or cocking them a snook! What will they say when the Saviour returns? How will they blow that off? Or will all the wicked really have passed the way of all the earth? Poor Satan. His side really doesn’t have a chance does it. @ I was sick two days last week and listened to an MP3 of Mirror Dancer by Bujold, 600 pages. As I finished it this morning, 4/12 so I could return it to the library I realized Mark’s 4 personality splits had an impact on me. I told Scott’77 all about them and then Gayelinn’72. Brandon, do you remember this part? >“Mark finds Miles, but is captured by Miles' old nemesis, Baron Ryoval, and tortured for five days, His personality fragments into four sub-personalities: Gorge the glutton, Grunt the sex pervert, Howl the masochist, and Killer the assassin. Together, the first three protect Mark's fragile persona, while Killer bides his time.” Friday, 4/13/18 Last night was bomc. A new tall guy with an entrancing voice dares to contribute, John. He mentioned that Mary Magdalene was married to Jesus and that is why she was the first woman to see him after the resurrection. I was offended. How dare he? I have thought the same but he treated it as common knowledge. He apologized to janice divine and thanked her for the lesson afterwards. All my rancor dissipated. I love people who dare to sincerely apologize. @ I worked at the Family Search Center until class last night. Long day. I decided to see if there were any other fun Spanish projects to work on. There are about 70 Spanish projects to choose from. This one from Costa Rica was the best. It comes in batches of 5 images with 4 entries per image. Notice that it tells how many need to be reviewed. The project from Argentina that I have worked on for a couple of months is so close it no longer lists reviewing needed.

Dear brothers and sisters, we constantly seek direction from the Lord on how we can help our members keep the commandments of God, especially those two great commandments to love God and our neighbors.1

For months we have been seeking a better way to minister to the spiritual and temporal needs of our people in the Savior’s way.

We have made the decision to retire home teaching and visiting teaching as we have known them. Instead, we will implement a newer, holier approach to caring for and ministering to others. We will refer to these efforts simply as “ministering.” Tues 4/17/18 Good afternoon Brandon, I hope you are doing well. Check out the above quote. Who do you think would say something like that? _____ @ Merril Palmer hosted our Empty Nester’s FHE last night and only 3 couples came: Vern, Palmers, Kent & Patricia Parker, Jack & Ronda Taylor. I was a mix of quiet and listening and intense and preachy. I feel so strongly about some gospel topics. I felt so uncomfortable about having come on so strong that I took Molly for a fast draining walk and then came home and emailed a brief apology. >>

I find your openness refreshing. And your scriptural insight is worth sharing.
No apologies necessary. It was a lively discussion.

< Relief Brandon! Although I was up listening to GC at 3:30am because I was uptight and couldn’t sleep, When I read my email this morning I found it was true. They do put up with me, and even value me. Yippee! @ I asked you to guess the above quote: _____ Can you believe that? Do you know how many lessons have beat Home Teaching to death? It has been a ball and chain on most elders their whole priesthood lives! @ Shocker, my old EQ president who doesn’t believe in Home Teaching, was made our new Melchizedek priesthood president over all the HP’s and Elders! President Cameron Tolman is it again! You may remember I offered a year ago january to line up home teaching appointments for him. He put me off and said, maybe next month. So you can tell it is important to me. Go back and read President Nelson’s first sentence. Why the change? Did you catch that? Answer: “how we can help our members keep. . . especially those two great commandments to love God and our neighbors.” As you know Brandon, I have reached out to you in love. You have that same opportunity. If you wanted you could write a message to all your loved ones and I could email it for you to everyone. You asked me to make a dinner for the Davenport’s, I took them an over- the- top- ham dinner with all the fixings. Your hands may be tied but ours aren’t. We can help you love others. @ The big question that keeps being asked is: What are their needs? Our effort to love our families should be to help meet their needs! My need is to socialize and feel included. Do my home teachers help me? Nope. Not this year. Not last year. Not the year before that. @ And as I have analyzed my feelings about it I realize that Satan has a hold on me. I feel frustrated and angry that they are not even trying to fulfill their calling. Guess where contention and anger come from? Yep. Those are Satan’s favorite tools in my opinion. We cannot feel the spirit when we are filled with anger or business or a bunch of other things. We need to feel quiet and calm and worthy if we want to feel the spirit. @ RMN is an extraordinary man. When you read his priesthood address you will see this story: An experience I had more than 60 years ago in Boston taught me just how powerful the privilege of ministering one-on-one can be. I was then a resident surgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital—on duty every day, every other night, and every other weekend. I had limited time for my wife, our four children, and Church activity. Nonetheless, our branch president assigned me to visit the home of Wilbur and Leonora Cox with the hope that Brother Cox might come back into activity in the Church. He and Leonora had been sealed in the temple.8 Yet Wilbur had not participated for many years.

My companion and I went to their home. As we entered, Sister Cox welcomed us warmly,9 but Brother Cox abruptly walked into another room and closed the door.

I went to the closed door and knocked. After a moment, I heard a muffled “Come in.” I opened the door to find Brother Cox sitting beside an array of amateur radio equipment. In that small room, he lit up a cigar. Clearly, my visit was not all that welcome. @ What was extraordinary about him at the beginning of that story? I went to the closed door and knocked.
Do you know anyone who would have the courage to do that Brandon? I would but none of my home teaching companions ever would! How could he have the courage to do that Brandon? @ Segway: Sister Jacki Salmon is in the MTC in Brazil. It is hot and humid and her clothing is always wet. She figured that if she hangs it above her bed in the rafters at night it is dry by morning. :) Isn’t that cute? She had to go out and try to street contact last week. Only 3 weeks in the country so far and she is out to talk and contact! She is as friendly and outgoing as any girl I know! But she was scared. Look at how she wrote she was going to overcome her fear: But we also had "proseletismo" on Saturday and while we were out a man told some of the sisters in my district that he couldn't believe they had only been here for 2 and a half weeks and they hadn't studied any Portuguese before coming!

O dom de linguas is real!!

While we were doing practicar proseletismo I learned more about myself.. We went out into a random part of São Paulo where it was BIG city, and we had 3 blocks in each direction where we were allowed to go. We had been told to not be upset if we didn't get any contacts so my goal for the day was to just make people smile and curious about our nametags.

I think that goal was definitely accomlished but I left wishing I would've tried to approach more people about the gospel. So wat I learned about myslef is that I'm chicken. I didn't even think of it like that until we were leaving, but I realized I'm so worried about upsetting people or making them feel bad that I won't talk about the things that lead to their discomfort.

My solution- I need to love the people more!!

If I truly love them I wil want nothing more for them than to let them experience the joy I feel from Christ.

Why did RMN follow Brother Cox and knock on his door? Wasn’t it obvious Cox did NOT want to visit with him? ____ @ OK, you get the message. @ I prayed to start bomc, I prayed to start choir practice, I prayed to close ENFHE. People dare to call on me to pray! How about you? @
@3:45pm I just went for a walk around the block. Some of the sidewalk has been displaced by tree roots. DHO showed two pictures of that happening in his talk. By using something common he helped me remember his talk. So just for fun, if little things matter, what little things did he mention? >The thrusting power that cracked these heavy concrete sidewalks was too small to measure on a daily or even a monthly basis, but its effect over time was incredibly powerful.

So is the powerful effect over time of the small and simple things we are taught in the scriptures and by living prophets. Consider the scripture study*1 we’ve been taught to incorporate into our daily lives. Or consider the personal prayers*2 and the kneeling family prayers*3 that are regular practices for faithful Latter-day Saints. Consider attendance at seminary for youth or institute classes for young adults*4. Though each of these practices may seem to be small and simple, over time they result in powerful spiritual uplift and growth. This occurs because each of these small and simple things invites the companionship of the Holy Ghost, the Testifier who enlightens us and guides us into truth, as President Eyring has explained.
Another source of spiritual uplift and growth is an ongoing practice of repenting, even of seemingly small transgressions*5. Our own inspired self-evaluations can help us see how we have fallen short and how we can do better. Such repentance should precede our weekly partaking of the sacrament. Some subjects to consider in this process of repentance are suggested in the hymn “Have I Done Any Good?”
Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.
Has anyone’s burden been lighter today
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
When they needed my help was I there?2
Surely these are small things, but surely they are good examples of what Alma taught his son Helaman: “And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord … bringeth about the salvation of many souls” (Alma 37:7).
President Steven C. Wheelwright gave an audience at Brigham Young University–Hawaii this inspired description of Alma’s teaching: “Alma confirms for his son that indeed the pattern the Lord follows when we exercise faith in Him and follow His counsel in small and simple things is that He blesses us with small daily miracles, and over time, with marvelous works.”3
President Howard W. Hunter taught that “frequently it is the commonplace tasks … that have the greatest positive effect on the lives of others, as compared with the things that the world so often relates to greatness.”4
. . .Those “seemingly insignificant” private decisions include how we use our time*6, what we view on television and the internet*7, what we read*8, the art and music with which we surround ourselves at work and at home*9, what we seek for entertainment*10, and how we apply our commitment to be honest and truthful*11. Another seemingly small and simple thing is being civil and cheerful in our personal interactions*12.
. . .President Wheelwright gave a similar caution to his BYU–Hawaii audience: “It is in failing to do the small and simple things that faith wavers, miracles cease, and progress towards the Lord and His kingdom is first put on hold and then begins to unravel as seeking after the kingdom of God is replaced with more temporal pursuits and worldly ambitions.”8
To protect against the cumulative negative effects that are destructive to our spiritual progress, we need to follow the spiritual pattern of small and simple things. Elder David A. Bednar described this principle in a BYU Women’s Conference: “We can learn much about the nature and importance of this spiritual pattern from the technique of … dripping water onto the soil at very low rates,” in contrast to flooding or spraying large quantities of water where it may not be needed.
He explained: “The steady drips of water sink deep into the ground and provide a high moisture level in the soil wherein plants can flourish. In like manner, if you and I are focused and frequent in receiving consistent drops of spiritual nourishment, then gospel roots can sink deep into our soul, can become firmly established and grounded, and can produce extraordinary and delicious fruit.”
Continuing, he said, “The spiritual pattern of small and simple things bringing forth great things produces firmness and steadfastness, deepening devotion, and more complete conversion to the Lord Jesus Christ and His gospel.”9
The Prophet Joseph Smith taught this principle in words now included in the Doctrine and Covenants: “Let no man count them as small things; for there is much … pertaining to the saints, which depends upon these things” (D&C 123:15).

And then Brandon, this is a concept I absolutely endorse and agree with: We are surrounded by media influences and cultural deteriorations that will carry us downstream in our values if we are not continually resisting. To move upstream toward our eternal goal, we must constantly keep paddling. It helps if we are part of a team that is paddling together, like a rowing crew in action. To extend that example even further, the cultural currents are so strong that if we ever stop paddling, we will be carried downstream toward a destination we do not seek but which becomes inevitable if we do not constantly try to move forward. @ So Brandon since I am my ward’s indexing specialist I can’t help but want to start and indexing/reviewing club. How can I inspire people? A question I had answer that is to ask, How many hours a day do you give to God? That is how I measure my usefulness in his kingdom. You probably already know that. @ Mark Clayton knew of my desire to explore and adventure. He would sometimes tap into it by asking me if I wanted to paddle bravely upstream in my memory therapy? I sure tried. But much of it was beyond me. @ I have so wanted a way to prove to people that we need to spiritually nourish ourselves everyday. DHO’s analogy of paddling upstream is perfect!  I love it! @
paddling upstream is perfect!  I love it! @
:)
Did you see that picture? I had no idea! So sweet. This is what he shared Sunday morning! This is what he shared Sunday morning!
Wed 4/18/18  How about some gossip? That is what MicheleR thinks this blog is! Last Thursday at bomc I forgave John and felt at peace when I got home. (I heard him apologize to JaniceD and it is easy for me to forgive those who apologize. It warms my heart. I see it as a strength.) But he likes the borderline. “Anyone who has studied much recognizes that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ wife.” I bristled. Where does it say that in the scriptures? Nope. It doesn’t. But I go to class to be stimulated and that prompted me spending hours on the internet looking things up.

Claims of a married Jesus aren't LDS Church doctrine

Published: May 17, 2006 12:00 am Deseret News
LDS doctrine does not endorse claims made in a popular book and movie that Jesus Christ was married.
"The Da Vinci Code," which opens today at the Cannes Film Festival in France, has invoked a lot of discussion from critics and Christians everywhere. The fictional story by author Dan Brown focuses on the premise that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene and fathered a child.
In a statement given to KSL, Dale Bills, a spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ stated:
"The belief that Christ was married has never been official Church doctrine. It is neither sanctioned nor taught by the Church. While it is true that a few Church leaders in the mid-1800s expressed their opinions on the matter, it was not then, and is not now, Church doctrine."
Professors of religion from around the state met earlier this week to discuss the story line, finding very little evidence within the Bible to support the book's storyline. @@ I loved that thriller book: “The Da Vinci Code”, did you? Well, in my research I ran across something even stranger than Jesus being married! There were 3 apostles in the 1800’s that taught he was a polygamist!  Oh my goodness. That is not what I was expecting. Does that startle you?
Cky J. Carrigan gives a summary:
"In sum, five high-ranking LDS authorities affirmed the plural marriage of the Son. The five include Orson Hyde, Orson Pratt, Jedediah M. Grant, Joseph F. Smith and Joseph Fielding Smith. Four of the five were apostles at the time of their remarks and two of the five ascended to the presidency of the Church. Jedediah M. Grant was not an apostle at the time of his remarks but was ordained as an apostle and appointed to the First Presidency soon afterward. Three of the five authorities also affirmed that the Son sired children in the flesh while the other two were silent on the Son’s fatherhood. The three include Orson Hyde, Jedediah M. Grant and Joseph F. Smith. All but one of these five high-ranking LDS authorities publicly taught these doctrines in official contexts. Only Joseph Fielding Smith refrained from teaching these doctrines publicly, presumably to minimize the ridicule from non-Mormons. Additionally, there is no evidence that any LDS authority has ever officially repudiated or rejected the teachings of Hyde, Pratt, Grant, Joseph F. Smith, and Joseph Fielding Smith on the marital and parental status of the Son." [1][T]he great Messiah who was the founder of the Christian religion, was a Polygamist ... God the Father had a plurality of wives ... The Son followed the example of his Father ... both God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ inherit their wives in eternity as well as in time." (Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 172)
"While it is correct that several early Church leaders, primarily in the mid-Nineteenth Century, agreed with various non-Mormon Bible scholars that Jesus Christ was married, that belief has never been accepted as official Church doctrine." -Stephen R. Gibson (Mormon) [1]
So do I print this stuff off and share it with my bomc? I made 6 copies. If John is there the answer is yes. :)
