Peru Kyle Adams

Kyle.adams@myldsmail.net

Hello Elder Adams, Dear Brother Kyle,

This is Vern Jensen, a retired Jr. High Science teacher and our ward chorister. I am only 59 but my principal Barbara Garrett wanted me out of teaching. Times have changed and I was giving her too much grief.  Watch out for mad scientists!

I served a mission in Guatemala and was so proud to go to such a cool sounding country. Peru is awesome too. I have written you once before and told you how when your dad was teaching our EQ he asked Pete Neilsen what Peru was like for his son and Pete said, fine.

Not very helpful in giving information was he?  Perhaps he thought our lesson time should be used more efficiently than talking about son’s country missions.

I have been bugging your parents for your address for a month or two. Two weeks ago when Mary, mom, came into the ward library where I was substituting I asked her to write it down since your dad hadn’t remembered. She said, I don’t know it.  I just press a button.

Makes sense to me.

It is Monday night and Sunday night I sent another email to your dad to remind him. Ta Daaaaa. Here it is.

I love missions and missionaries. Is there a more noble cause in the world? I tried to live true to my HF on my mission and I knew how my family needed his blessings. So that was part of my prayers. HF, if possible, please bless my family for any worthy work I perform here.

I really did not deserve it but I got to help 2 new missionaries start and served as a zone leader and then one of two assistants to the president when he changed to the next one. Arnold -> O’Donnal were the two presidents I served under. How I loved President Arnold. I only worked with President O’Donnal for 3 months and he was just settling in as the new president. He gave me a gold and green pen/mechanical pencil set as a going home present. I don’t know if I would be remembered by him or not. But it was such a privilege to serve and help. I was blessed way more than I deserved.

Perhaps I have always had a loud voice and when the assistants got to teach at the Zone conferences and translate for the Spanish speaking native elders, I was some help. At least I tried hard.

Sometimes we feel like the man with 2 small fishes. We do not feel like we have much to offer the Savior but we offer him our two small fishes anyway and he is able to feed the multitudes.  That was me. I did take typing in High School and I had 3 years of Spanish as well as a semester of Spanish at BYU, even if I did get a “C”.

I wasn’t a very good typist but better than some. My job was to plan and arrange for all the district conferences. I was the assistant in charge of member issues and conferences. My companion was the assistant in charge of the elders. We both had to read all the letters to the president each week and write comments on them and point out things we did not want him to miss.

One of my new missionaries turned out to be a reformed thief and drinker etc.. It broke my heart to be in the office and a part of his excommunication when he was sent home. I tried writing to him but never got a response. He was put with a weak elder and they habituated a saloon and gave in to female temptations. Hard to believe isn’t it?

In Guatemala they have all kinds of catholic saint celebrations. One of my lesson acceptors/investigators was a silver jeweler and we would visit him while he worked. He had  a special blow pipe he would use in the burner to focus the heat on the jewelry to melt and shape it. It was fascinating the first 5 times we visited him. One season his house was chosen as the shrine place and he cleared out his living room with the dirt floor for the mother Mary image to be placed. Many lit candles and worshiped there in that little neighborhood. Eventually the day arrived for the anticipated celebration and they hosted a party with special painted gourds to eat and drink from. Of course we were invited. They had both red and black tamales. The drink tasted of alcohol for my first time and I warned my companion not to drink ours. He said, really? Cool! And drank them both. He told me of these really cool speakers he had stolen before his mission and before repentance and how he had figured out how he could get the radio to turn off automatically by putting in a cassette tape. When the cassette ended the system would turn off.

So even though this elder cut his hair nice and short he had some dark temptations and patterns inside. I was heartbroken at his excommunication and wished I had been able to be his companion and kept him safe.

I love General Conference talks. My parents were wackoes so distrust is strong in my family. But thank heavens I can trust the prophet and apostles. I appreciate the fact that when evil or wickedness is found it is removed in the leadership of the church. I needed to center myself somehow last year when I retired. I decided to try and listen to all 43 years of GCtalks. Soon I discovered lds study tools and began highlighting my favorite passages and filing them on line. I have 4500 at this point and they are wonderful parts/ truths /insights that I love and value and teach me.

Your dad, Tim and I get along fantastic. WE both love to joke and laugh. He has a much broader vocabulary than I do. If I used a big word I had to explain what it meant period after period all day long so I soon learned to explain things in Jr. High vocabulary.

I took me forever to carefully memorize all the discussions. It was hard, hard work for me. We had flip charts and one of the pictures was of the then current prophet, Spencer W Kimball. [I still have his signature on my mission call.]  To help me concentrate I would place his picture on the glass block window sill and give him my discussions over and over again as I was learning them.

Kyle, I found a comment from your dad so strange recently. He said becoming a psychotherapist was easy as long as you could memorize and regurgitate the material.

Evidently he had a good memorization mind. Not me! It kept me humble I suppose. There was one elder in my MTC group who could memorize without hardly trying. But he had testimony and  attitude issues, and red hair. : )

Anyway, I made a special file for humor from the general authorities. There must be a couple of hundred entries. Don’t you love it when they crack a joke?

In my last letter I include some riddles. Bishop Salmon taught me how to do riddles in a fun way at scout summer camp last year. The riddler is only allowed to answer yes /no questions. That way you can get hints along the way to discovering the answer.  I will include 10 silly riddles just so you can practice with your companion if you want.

21. How do we know that Noah was preceded from the ark by at least three other people? (Because the Bible says that Noah came forth [fourth].)
22. Why was the giant Goliath very much astonished when David hit him with a stone? (Because such a thing had never before entered his head.)
23. Why didn’t Noah catch more fish than he did during the voyage of the ark? (Because he had only two worms.)
24. Where was Noah when the light went out? (In the d’ark).
25. Who was the strongest man in the Bible? (Jonah, because the whale couldn’t hold him even after he got him down.)
26. What proof have we that there was sewing in the time of David? (He was hemmed in on all sides.)
27. In what place did a rooster in the Bible crow where all the people in the world could hear him? (In the ark.)
28. What reason is there to think that Moses wore a wig? (Because he was sometimes seen with Aaron [hair on], and sometimes without.)
29. Which are the two smallest things mentioned in the Bible? (The widow’s mite and the wicked flee [flea].)
30. Who was older, David or Goliath? (David must have been because he rocked Goliath to sleep.)

Here are my 5 most recent humors from Conference:

“Follow Me”
Joseph B. Wirthlin, April 2002 General Conference
"There was simply too much to do in the time available. Instead of sacrificing things of significance, I decided I’d get up earlier, take care of my business, then spend the time required to be a good father and husband and a faithful member of the Church. It wasn’t easy. There were mornings when the alarm clock went off that I cracked open an eyelid and glared at it, daring it to keep ringing."

It Can’t Happen to Me
James E. Faust, April 2002 General Conference
"One of the great myths in life is when men think they are invincible. Too many think that they are men of steel, strong enough to withstand any temptation. They delude themselves into thinking, “It cannot happen to me.” Borrowing a thought from Bertrand Russell, “We are all like the turkey who wakes up [Thanksgiving] morning expecting lunch as usual. Things can go wrong at any time.” 1 Brethren, it can happen to any of us at any time. So much of our course in life is influenced by forces we only partly perceive."

Dear Are the Sheep That Have Wandered
James E. Faust, April 2003 General Conference
"When my wise mother-in-law saw other children misbehaving, she used to say, “I never say my children would not do that because they might be out doing it right while I am speaking!”"

Loyalty
Gordon B. Hinckley, April 2003 General Conference
"Very recently a certain moving picture was acclaimed the best of the year. I have not seen it, nor do I anticipate doing so. But I am told that it is laden with sex, that the use of profanity runs throughout."

Loyalty
Gordon B. Hinckley, April 2003 General Conference

"You, of course, have heard of the man who lived to a ripe old age and was asked by reporters to what he attributed his longevity. He replied that when he and his wife were married they determined that if they argued, one would leave the house and go outside. He said, “Gentlemen, I attribute my longevity to the fact that I have breathed so much fresh air during all these many years.”"

indexing year in review

Your comment is awaiting moderation.
What a privilege! 1-The brethren own this world’s technology. This is what it is for. 2- 70 billion is going to take a while. 3- Bro. Chenney is awesome, in his supervision of the II. 4- It took me almost a year to succeed with my first batch of Italian birth certificates. The Saint George FHC/FRL did not have anyone working on them as I walked around and around checking the computers. One hour of failure is all I can take a day. After about 10 days I gave up all together. Then the Worldwide Indexing Event 66K day came and I just had to be a part of it. So I stooped to doing American marriages. At least I could read those. The next month Elder Chenney did another II workshop and I did not think I had learned anything, but low and behold I succeeded the next day with an Italian batch! I was shocked, stupified, and incredulous! I did 100 in August, 1K in Sept, 2K in Oct n November, and 3K in December. 8.5K for the year. 5-My stake indexing chair emailed me congratulations for being a top indexer in the stake last year. pride, PRIDE. I wrote back and offered to help her congratulate all bottom indexers of the year. Dear Brother Jones, thank you for being one of the bottom indexers in the Bloomington Hills Stake last year. : )
She knew better than to take me up on my offer! AB

2014 Indexing Year in Review

YearInReview
It is hard to believe that 2014 has already come and gone. Did you accomplish the goals you set for last year? Hopefully, you were able to shed those few pounds, find the love of your life, or snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef. Perhaps you finally learned how to make an omelet or, better yet, crack an egg without pieces of the shell turning up in your soufflé. Whatever your goals were for 2014, we hope that you were able to accomplish them. For FamilySearch indexing, we have had quite a busy year.
Do you remember the Worldwide Indexing Event that took place in July? More than 66,000 volunteers came together to index at least one batch and set a new record for the most participants in a single day. We were overwhelmed by the incredible stories that you shared with us about your experience during the event. And who could forget Captain Jack Starling when he announced the launch of obituary projects at RootsTech 2014? His famous slogan of “dead men tell no tales, but their obituaries do,” still resonates through the halls of FamilySearch.
Anticipation is high for the new indexing program as we began beta testing this past year. We have received great feedback from many of you and hope to see many of your good suggestions incorporated in the new program in the near future. Last, thanks for helping decorate our Christmas tree this year. Would you believe that we nearly surpassed the record for the most volunteers in a year—the record that was set in 2012 during the very popular United States 1940 census indexing effort? Who knows what we can do in 2015 if we set our minds to it?
We are so grateful for this past year and all the exciting things that happened, but most importantly we are grateful for all of you! In 2014, 167,790,821 records were indexed and arbitrated and 319,286 volunteers participated. As volunteers, you have continued to surpass our expectations. We have seen you achieve your indexing goals time and time again. We hope that this year you will help even more people find their ancestors by making more records searchable online than ever before.
As you set your New Year’s resolutions this year, what are your indexing and family history goals? Whether you try arbitrating for the first time, index your first batch, invite a friend to volunteer, or focus on your favorite indexing project, we hope that you will find joy in knowing your contribution helps people all over the world.
Share your indexing goals for 2015 by commenting below or sending us an email at fsindexing@familysearch.org.

The Joy of serving UNanomymously!

3:40pTuesday, 1/20/15 Hey Brandon,@I went through all kinds of contortions to experiment and send you a couple of postcards last week. One of them was hand written and the other was typed. I got 1K words on the handwritten and 4.5K words on the typed one. I had 3 letters returned in December and I sent you a portion of one of those. @You said your eyes were good and I picked a font that was complete even at 4 point size. One of the printers at the FHC wasn't smooth so I had to pick the other one to print it. I kept a copy for myself so I could remember what I had included. A child and I took turns counting words on a page in the book of mormon and kept getting in the 650's. My cell phone only allows 160 characters on a page and can send up to five pages at a time. This post card is alrea*dy at 800 characters so that is as much as my cell phone can do at a time.@ Since I couldn't type your letters I decided to start typing some to my son. Since I haven't heard from you so there is nothing for me to respond to, and I don't want to type stuff over again when I have already told the story once I will just include my letters to him to keep you up to date and entertained. We hardly dare be totally honest with people. If you didn't want me to go to the effort of writing and sharing with you because you found it boring, you would never dare tell me! It is just to hard to be that totally honest, huh!@ I can't tell you how much social fun I have had in the past weeks and month. I have had a total blast. And when we feel those wonderful rewarding feelings of having done something helpful and that HF is happy with, no amount of car delays and frustrations can take the specialness out of our evening prayers at night when we conclude our day. It might sound funny but at 12:15am I started to pray Saturday night and at 12:45 I checked the clock again because I had just finished reliving my day in my prayer. And it was joyful. Same thing happened again Sunday night after some sticking -out -my -neck experiences.@ Where to start? @ One of my HT family members, Bonnie Carter, texted back that she was sick Sunday, after I offered to come home teaching in a text. As I sat here writing my son Michael a letter it kept bugging me that all I had responded was “K”. I learned that from my oldest son. A one letter response which I love. But in this case my conscience was bugging me. I am supposed to be a caring home teacher and when I find out a family member is sick I just respond, K? Not very caring if you ask me. @ But what should I say? I sat back on my bed and pulled up my text message screen not quite knowing what to say but I started. I talked about how in the same way she was nourishing and taking good care of her body so she could feel better, we also need to nourish and care for our soul, our spirit. She had been working the previous Sunday and sick this one. I encouraged her to do a conference talk on TV or something like my last Home teaching visit. I couldn't quite fit my last sentence in my 800 characters so I decided to delete the words. I started to delete my carefully, painfully worded text to a married sister, something way out of my comfort zone, and it erased the whole thing! @ I couldn't believe it was gone. I tried stuff to bring it back but no luck. I have a slide out keyboard on my phone so I slid it in and set it upside down on my chest in frustration and practicing patience. What should I do now? Should I call and leave a vmail instead? What if she answers? Can I say it to her face, to her directly? I doubt it.@ I called and she finally picked up. Darn! @ I did my best to explain and she said, you are awesome! That was not what I was expecting.-V She said it again, and I didn't know how to respond and so I said, So you can related to what I am saying? She said, This is exactly what I needed. Vern was in shock. I am not very good at accepting compliments nor continuing normal conversation after getting and unexpected compliment! So I said, OK, thanks, Good bye. Click @ Relief, I didn't have to face it anymore. You can't quite do that when you are in person but on the phone, there is a safety space there. : )@ Later that night I was on Facebook and Bonnie Carter had posted an awesome Conference Talk on Friday. She was already concerned about spiritual nourishment and she was feeding/feasting. So I needed to find some way to make that comment in a secular world. This is what I wrote her.
lds.org
V-What? This is like a good spiritual vitamin! You have been nourishing the spirit haven't you! Sunday 10:15p

/She liked it. : ) @ So perhaps you can get a sense of how special Saturday and Sunday were for me this week. It is like if you reach out to bless someone else's life, three fingers are still pointing at you and you feel 3 times as good as they do! So fun. @ There is one part I left off. How did I get the evidence bag back from Tami Salmon? That is where the Welches Carmel Apple soda was.@ Well while I was flying high after visiting Shannon and dropping off the peppers and collecting her tears,( just kidding about the tears. Those tears of joy for being appreciated for something sacrificed and well done.) I rode my bike to Salmon's house so I could share the rest of the story. She returned the evidence bag. I showed her what the bottles looked like and she asked, So you still really don't know do you? I responded, of course I know. You don't get tears in your eyes if you haven't sacrificed and served! But Tami is right the Jensen's have not admitted anything!! And I so want to ask them how they kept my dog Lily who was often resting on the front porch, from making a fuss. She even barked at me last night when I snuck out through the garage to see how long Izy was going to bark at her echo!! 30 minutes, what a pain. : (

12 days Conclusion

Tuesday, January 20, 2015 So here I am writing the conclusion a month later.  Talk about fun!!

Saturday, 1/17/15, I drove over to the FHC and found the parking lot empty. Oh, this is the January 17,18,19,20 they were going to be closed for MLKing Day. As you can tell dates don’t mean very much to me anymore.

“Not knowing beforehand the things I would do” came into play again! Off to WalMart to see if they had pickled peppers. Time to follow through on thanking Mark and Shannon Jensen for the 12 days of Christmas. I couldn’t find the #2 cans of jalapenos and I was worried they might not be able to use them anyway. I decided to ad-match the 16oz bottles like those at Albertsons. I had the ad with me. They had 5 bottles of super hot yellows and I got 5 other fun types to choose from. 10for $10 is the deal.

I couldn’t get into the Southside of BH because of a marathon. I couldn’t get into the Eastside of BH’s because of the marathon so I parked on the golf course road and waited. All the while texting my 4 daughters with new babies about Lincolns hospital visit the night before. RSV and Pneumonia! Dang.

The line of cars started moving so I hopped in line and got home. I called Jensen’s to see if I could come by with the choices. Yep, Shannon was home. She did miss church the next day with her ear swollen shut. I rode down on my bike with 3 items: old hymnbook, empty #2 Jalapeno can, 6 types of pickled peppers.

WE sat at the kitchen table and I explained what the old hymnbook was for. I had put it in the paper cutter and sliced out the first 20 pages so Mark can take a hymn to work in his pocket if he wants, as he is memorizing them! I have sent him 6 months of scheduled hymns twice at his request!

Next I showed the #2 can and we laughed about Mark’s “91 Christmas lights silk tie she gave him and he can wear once or twice a year.

Next I brought out the 6 bottles of pickled peppers and she was quick to say she would never touch the HOT bottle. I told her that she knew all the story. I had blogged them and kept them informed all along the way. Plus, I had emailed Mark one of the later blogs called TV d e t e c t I v e AGENCY, which he had responded to. Of course, not admitting anything. In fact he wished me luck last Sunday in my search and I replied, I am satisfied that I have found my source/ conclusion. (As I think about this and the impact it would have on the family keeping a secret year after year and delivering and not getting caught 12 days in a row! I can’t help but suspect it is like a bond of secrecy in good, in righteousness. Those guys read the scriptures, every one of the kids has to practice the piano each day. And on and on. Who would have thought such an awesome family would ever move into our ward!? I have teased them and loved them from the start. We had the same names!)

So I said to Shannon, I am not going to ask anything. And she replied, That’s good because I’m not going to tell anything. : )

I noticed though that her eyes were watering, and she pulled her legs up in front of her on the kitchen stool-chair. I had not been looking for additional clues but once I noticed I kept watching.

I pulled out each of the 6 types of peppers and they seemed to glow in her spotless kitchen and brown granite counter top and table. I pointed out which ones were mild and then asked her to choose the ones she thought they could use. She picked 2 of the bright yellow ones. Sliced and whole. I then persuaded her that each of the other 3 were mild and unusual and fun to try as well and that I would take the HOT one home with the 4 others I had left at home. 5 for me, 5 for you.

You are such a kind man she said as we walked to the front door. Well, I am just reflecting you, my kind neighbors. Yep, her eyes were moist again.

Now is that how you would respond if you had not done the good deed 12 times? Nope!!

V-Would you like to keep this empty #2 Jalapeno can.  S-Yes.

Would you be interested in an empty can if you and your family had not invested themselves in that service, and you wanted to share it and celebrate with them? Nope!!!

My sister Camille uses the phrase, “that was the last nail in the coffin.”

When was your last nail? When were you convinced?

Did you notice how the Mosses had no problem saying, “Nope, it wasn’t us this time.” We’re too old. We can’t run away from the door.

Did you notice how the Jensen’s just couldn’t lie, and say, Nope, It wasn’t us.

The righteous get caught in their own traps! : )  Like me! and hopefully like you!

Chapter 4
Sunday 10:39pm
Hey Tami Kalmon, I found a home for that bottle of soda. @my paragraph sign @ Garretts are teaching the 17 year olds. They took Stauffers place. Kim was visiting with me as I subbed in the library today.(Week 5!) He says this new group is awesome: Seth N, Brock J etc.. @ He is tough to crack. Kim doesn't talk or share much of anything in all the years I have known him. So I have never been sure of his steadiness. But today he admitted missing being a librarian! He spent 4 years int there he said. And he admitted that it was a good thing he was there because the other two were "flakes". (My word!) And I have been in there for the last 5 weeks because they have not shown up!@ I have a saying, "Once a librarian, always a librarian." Because when a sub is needed it can't just be anyone! @ Anyway, I was so pleased to find a fellow spirit that I had to emphasis my admiration with that gold-bowed soda and 2 pages to color out of the current Friend magazine. @ It lifted my heart more than theirs I am sure. @ So lastly, if you haven't fallen asleep through all this drivel. THE MAIN POINT IN WRITING Were the labels of green and red similar to the ones you saved? @ btw thanks for telling me about the swai caught in Darrin's retainer. I had pleasant, humorous thoughts as he came up to be sustained in front with the bishop today. : )
Monday 9:48am
You are hilarious! Yes, the green and red tags were very similar, but I never did know for sure if it was the Jensens - it was just my guess. I think you cracked them though! They are a great family - just as you are a great guy! Must be something about that name! Have a good day.

The Devil’s Throat

The Devil’s Throat

"Many countries now face the dangers of terrorism."

The Devil’s Throat

"Those of us who have served in the military in wartime have experienced the disruption in life that comes from being uprooted from home and family, wholesome associations, and the influence of the organized Church.

The Devil’s Throat

"also believe that in the future the opposition from Satan will be both more subtle and more open. While in some ways it may be more blatant, it will be masked with greater sophistication and cunning. We will need greater spirituality to perceive all the forms of evil and greater strength to resist it."

The Devil’s Throat

"Some young people want to rebel against restraints. Some of you think it isn’t “cool” to be obedient to your parents or to follow the counsel of your bishop or quorum president. Bishop Richard C. Edgley shared an experience he had as a young boy about the consequences of being reckless and disobedient:

“When I was a young boy, our garage and the neighbor’s garage were about five feet apart. The neighbor’s garage was very old and dilapidated, and some of the boards were breaking. I, on occasion, would climb onto our garage and jump from one garage to the other and play on top of them. My father had told me, ‘Stay off the garages,’ but I didn’t. One time when I was playing on them, I jumped from our garage and fell through the roof of the neighbor’s garage, scraping my back and legs badly. Because I had been disobedient, I foolishly decided not to tell anyone that I had hurt myself. I went in the house and washed the scrapes and scratches as well as I could, but I couldn’t reach the ones on my back to put antiseptic on them or even wash them clean. I bore the burden of pain, worry over infection setting in, and guilt for several days while the healing process took place.” 4

As someone once said, “One of the best things in the world to be is a boy; it requires no experience, but needs some practice to be a good one.”"
Can you relate? Who wants to confess disobedience?

The Devil’s Throat

"Some of you may have been deceived by thinking that you can find excitement by dabbling in drugs, alcohol, pornography, and illicit sex. I warn you that such enticements as these are slippery and dangerous like the rocks by the Devil’s Throat, and they will only lead you into Satan’s territory. The way out of that kind of danger is difficult and will leave you with far more than a few scrapes and scratches."

The Devil’s Throat

"All of us want to find out who we really are and what our place is in the world. Some of you young people are trying to find your identity by being different from your parents and families in what they stand for. God made each of us to be different from anyone else in the world, as our DNA and fingerprints prove. You don’t have to work at having a separate identity; you already have one."

The Devil’s Throat

"Sometimes we must be unpopular and simply say, “This is not right.”"

The Devil’s Throat

"With all my heart I urge you to please help us push back the world."

The Devil’s Throat

"We are the possessors and custodians of these commanding powers which can and do roll back the power of Satan on the earth."

The Devil’s Throat

"As priesthood holders of this Church, part of the price we need to pay is by living differently from the world."

The Devil’s Throat

"My dear young friends, there is another great truth that you young men must learn. It is that everything has a price. There is a price to pay for success, fulfillment, accomplishment, and joy. There are no freebies. If you don’t pay the price that is needed for success, you will pay the price of failure. Preparation, work, study, and service are required to achieve and find happiness."

The Devil’s Throat

"There have always been two great competing forces in the world. These began before the world was created. These opposing forces are the forces of good and evil. Between these two powerful forces each of us is caught in a tug of war."

The Devil’s Throat

"Much of what comes from the devil is alluring and enticing. It glitters and is appealing to the sensual parts of our nature. His message sounds so reasonable and easy to justify. His voice is usually smooth and intriguing. If it were harsh or discordant, nobody would listen, nobody would be enticed."
=======================

Stand in Your Appointed Place

"He instructed Gideon to take the men to water to observe the manner in which they should drink of the water. Those who lapped the water were placed in one group, and those who bowed down upon their knees to drink were placed in another. The Lord said unto Gideon, “By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.”"
His tone changed as he drew his talk to a close. I realized I had been totally drawn in again, just like being hypnotized. What a man! What a talent.
=======================

Loyalty

"This applies to you, my dear boys who are in this meeting. You are particular targets for the adversary. If he can get you now, he knows he may win you for a lifetime. There has been implanted within you wondrous powers and instincts for a divine purpose. However, when these are perverted, they become destroyers rather than builders."
Those feelings/drives/longings/powers/instincts can be supplanted and waylaid and entrenched in perverted ways from that of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Deny yourselves of all ungodliness. But Build yourselves of all godliness!

Loyalty

"You, of course, have heard of the man who lived to a ripe old age and was asked by reporters to what he attributed his longevity. He replied that when he and his wife were married they determined that if they argued, one would leave the house and go outside. He said, “Gentlemen, I attribute my longevity to the fact that I have breathed so much fresh air during all these many years.”"

Loyalty

"I have long felt that the greatest factor in a happy marriage is an anxious concern for the comfort and well-being of one’s companion. In most cases selfishness is the leading factor that causes argument, separation, divorce, and broken hearts."

Loyalty

"To you men I issue a challenge. Run from the tide of sleaze that would overcome you. Flee the evils of the world."

Loyalty

"Very recently a certain moving picture was acclaimed the best of the year. I have not seen it, nor do I anticipate doing so. But I am told that it is laden with sex, that the use of profanity runs throughout."

Loyalty

"Pornography is one of the hallmarks of our time."

Loyalty

"Pornography is one of the hallmarks of our time. Its producers grow rich on the gullibility of those who like to watch it. In the opening lines of the revelation which we call the Word of Wisdom, the Lord declares: “In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation”
Woah, matching food/tea/coffee/tobacco with visual!

Loyalty

"He then goes on to talk about the food we put into our mouths. The same language might be applied with reference to that which we take into our minds when we indulge in pornography."

Loyalty

"I think of loyalty in terms of being true to ourselves."

1-Don't sell yourself short in marriage.
2-Allow yourself your real live feelings.(MC) Be accepting and genuine with yourself. If you feel wimpy or weak, so what! It is OK.
3-Allow yourself to Love HF with all your heart, mind and soul.
4- Again, don't block or deny your deep down true feelings. Then you honor yourself instead of deny yourself and you can grow and protect if need be.vj

Loyalty

"When I was a university student, I said to my father on one occasion that I felt the General Authorities had overstepped their prerogatives when they advocated a certain thing. He was a very wise and good man. He said, “The President of the Church has instructed us, and I sustain him as prophet, seer, and revelator and intend to follow his counsel.”"

Loyalty

"In 1933 there was a movement in the United States to overturn the law which prohibited commerce in alcoholic beverages. When it came to a vote, Utah was the deciding state.

I was on a mission, working in London, England, when I read the newspaper headlines that screamed, “Utah Kills Prohibition.”

President Heber J. Grant, then President of this Church, had pleaded with our people against voting to nullify Prohibition. It broke his heart when so many members of the Church in this state disregarded his counsel."

Hey Michael,

These 3 came back to back. JEF< TSM< GBH
I love jef. He just reaches me and touches my heart strings some how. And this title was awesome! I was lulled into tsm and although his topic is not one I am thinking is applicable to you, somehow it says something special and I am not sure what. And Loyalty is my all time favorite character trait. In my opinion it is the biggest component of love and trust. And here gbh gives it meaning in 3 wonderful aspects.

So at this point I think I will just tack it on to the next month in line, but it might end up getting delivered is some other way. : )
I love you,
